Southern Africa

I'm also curious about the culture of the various white Southern African states. I'm already planning on getting a copy of "The Great Betrayal" by Ian Smith, the former PM of Rhodesia once I can afford a copy.

I'm especially interested in a good history of the Afrikaner nation. Mercer described Hermann Giliomee’s "The Afrikaners: Biography of a People" as the typical self-flagellating account one would expect these days. I've seen "White Tribe of Africa" by David Harrison recommended by haven't been able to find any information on it. Has anybody read it or heard anything concerning it?

Ian Smith

I once met Ian Smith in Knightsbridge in London. He signed a copy of his book for me and we had a brief chat about the USA. He said he often went to San Diego to visit relatives. A great man. He will be missed.

EN-

Yes, I've read that Good Ole Smithy was a very humble, down-to-Earth man in real life. He is certainly one of the most misunderstood figures of the later half of the 20th century. He may stand as the point when the charge of 'Nazi' became meaningless. It was a charge hurdled at him far too often -a true absurdity for Smith had suffered several injuries fighting the Nazis during WWII as had many white Rhodesians.

On the topic of the thread, I recently got a copy of White Tribe of Africa. I'll try to post some thoughts on that once I get around to reading it.
